Members Soirée — Friday 25 September

Our September soirée took us back to 19th-century France for an entertaining and fascinating presentation on the life and legacy of Napoleon III, presented by Val McRoberts.

Val brought this intriguing period of French history to life, exploring Napoleon III’s rise to power and the significant political, social and cultural changes that shaped France during his reign.

The evening was one of our best-attended soirées of the year, with a wonderful turnout from our members and guests. Adding to the occasion was an exquisite selection of food, making for a memorable night of French history, conversation, good company and cuisine.

A heartfelt thank you to Val for such an engaging presentation, and to everyone who helped make the evening such a great success.

Alliance Française de Ballarat celebrated France's National Day, le 14 juillet, with a delightful July Soirée that brought members and guests together for an evening of French cuisine, culture, and conviviality.

Guests enjoyed a French-inspired menu of mixed canapés, slow-cooked lamb served with ratatouille, French-style potatoes and beans, followed by a choice of cheesecake or strawberry charlotte for dessert. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by many attendees embracing the theme with à la française attire.

The highlight of the evening was an engaging illustrated presentation by Alliance member Edward Coleridge, who shared the story of his barge cruise along the picturesque Canal du Nivernais. 

Through his photographs and personal reflections, guests were transported to la France profonde, discovering the peaceful waterways, charming villages, and enduring beauty of rural France.

The evening was a wonderful celebration of French heritage, offering members the opportunity to enjoy good food, engaging conversation, and an inspiring glimpse into one of France's most beautiful regions.

We thank everyone who attended and helped make the soirée such a memorable occasion.

With a distinguished career performing with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria across opera, ballet, and orchestral productions, Susan brings a wealth of experience and passion to the stage. She is also the current Concertmaster of the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra.

🎻 Susan’s presentation, The French Violin, will take guests on a fascinating journey through the history of the violin from a French perspective — exploring its role at court, the makers who shaped its development, and the extraordinary music written for this iconic instrument.
